Automotive Wire Conductor: Copper-Clad Steel Benefits

Looking at the domestic steel industry for metal materials products, the output and downstream demand for special steel materials have increased significantly. However, the quality requirements for steel used in composite metal materials vary, especially for steel used in high-end metal composite wire drawing, which requires further innovation, research and development, and quality improvement. Currently, the quality control of copper-clad steel wire for automotive cables faces the following problems:

  1. The high strength and poor flowability of the coiled steel used for copper-clad steel wire result in poor drawing performance, high processing stress, and an inability to meet the requirements for high-quality cable materials.
  2. The copper-clad steel industry differs from the copper materials industry; the quality of steel used by different companies is inconsistent, leading to significant differences in welding performance control.
  3. The drawing steel used for copper-clad steel wire processing generally has low purity, large inclusion sizes, and unstable surface quality control of the coiled steel, causing frequent wire breakage during drawing and stranding processes, severely impacting production efficiency and product quality.
  4. The conductivity of current copper-clad steel wire coiled products is generally low, typically within the 15-16% IACS range, directly increasing the processing cost of high-conductivity copper-clad steel wire for automotive cables.

In early 2018, We in cooperation with Shougang Group, successfully developed ultra-low carbon high-boron steel coiled products for copper-clad steel wire, thus integrating the upstream and downstream industrial chains. Ultra-low carbon high-boron steel wire rod for copper-clad steel wire achieves a conductivity of 19%, excellent mechanical properties, low magnetic permeability, good flexibility, and high steel purity. Furthermore, its consistent throughout, torsional bending performance, and low yield strength ratio meet the requirements for processing and manufacturing high-end copper-clad steel wire products. It is suitable for the automotive industry in processing and manufacturing soft-state high-conductivity copper-clad steel wire harnesses and medium-to-high strength (≥ 800MPa) hard-state copper-clad steel wire harnesses.

In February 2025, the international standard ISO 14811:2024, “Ultra-low carbon high-boron steel wire rod for copper-clad steel wire,” was promulgated and implemented by the ISO organization, specifying dedicated wire rod products for copper-clad cables. In June 2023, the national standard GB/T38347-2019, “Hot-rolled ultra-low carbon high-boron steel wire rod,” was also promulgated and implemented. Currently, the industry standard “Hot-rolled ultra-low carbon steel wire rod for cables” has completed its review and is awaiting approval and promulgation. With the successful development of ultra-low carbon high-boron steel wire rod for copper-clad steel wire, related copper-clad steel products have attracted significant market attention and favor.

This high-strength copper-clad steel wire can meet the application requirements of automotive cables in:

  • Special signal cables,
  • Automotive grounding wires,
  • Automotive transmission cables,
  • High-performance preparation of new energy vehicle wires,
  • Signal transmission wires, etc.

Copper-clad high-boron steel wire can meet the manufacturing and usage requirements of various cable products, including tin-plated copper-clad steel wire for automotive RF cable cores, soft copper-clad steel wire for automotive wiring harnesses, automotive grounding systems, and copper-clad steel stranded wire for audio/video and signal transmission. It exhibits excellent compatibility with the automotive industry’s requirements for high-temperature resistance, good vibration resistance, flame retardancy, flexibility, corrosion resistance, and environmental protection.
